Geocache Description:

This is a hill walking event. While the route has been selected to be walkable by a wide range of abilities please read the details carefully, especially the equipment you are requested to bring/wear before deciding that this event is for you.

The event will take place on Saturday 11th June, leaving the Car Park @ 09:30. The event coordinates are the meeting place. Car Parking is available at this location for 6-8 cars. Depending on numbers on the day there are several other close by locations we can relocate cars to should the need arise. To log the event you will be required to at least attempt the walk. Turning up at the car park and waving us good bye does not count as being part of a walking event. While the event will pass 2 caches (Binnian Tunnel and The Mourne Monument) the event is not a cache hunt and should not be viewed as such. It is hoped that we will be able to witness at first hand the effects of the recent fire as well as having an enjoyable walk. If anyone detatches themselves from the group to attempt other caches in the area they do so at their own risk and the event will continue without them.
The route is approximately 6km long one way. The initial park of the route is a tarmac access road with little elevation changes. The next part of the route is mostly rough track with some small sections of light scrub. There will be some height gain but nothing significant and there will be no steep sections.
It is intended to walk as far as the Mourne Monument. At a modest pace that should take about 2 hours. At this point the group can decide to retrace it's steps or, depending on weather, fitness and experience take in some of the mountain tops to the West/North of the monument. This will be optional and not required to log the event. While the route is a modest one as hill walking goes we have no control over the weather and even a minor slip on an uneven track can result in serious injury. With this in mind I would ask anyone attending the event to dress appropriately for hill walking, with emphasis on good footwear and rain gear. Enough food and water should be carried for a days walking.
