Don't Need To Know But Might Be Of Interest

The other side of Alices’ story is that of her 3rd husband William De La Pole, Duke of Suffolk. William was quite a mover in Royal circles in his time, at one stage he was actively engaged in fighting during the 100 year war with France and lost both his older brother and father during the war.

In 1429 things were going quite badly for him and he was forced to surrender to the French, remaining a prisoner for three years until he was ransomed and returned to England.

Interestingly it appears, from recorded dates, that his marriage to Alice took place whilst he was still a prisoner in France in 1930, I do have to wonder if it was Alice who put up the ransom money for his return.

William made quite a blot in his copy book just before his surrender to the French as it is recorded that the night before he surrendered had a little comfort “he laye in bed with a Nonne whom he toke oute of holy profession and defouled” this coupling with a nun resulted in the illegitimate birth of Jane, who he then financially supported and who went on to make a decent marriage to local man Thomas Stonor, who had been a ward of Alice’s father Thomas. From letters published this was a warm and loving marriage.

Poor Jane, her heritage went as far as being discussed in Parliament when her father had become very unpopular and his enemies were trying to put him down. Much as his enemies loathed him it was never suggested that Williams relationship with Janes mother was less than consensual. It is most likely that this was a young woman forced into her profession unwillingly.

After his return to England William became Constable of Wallingford Castle and rose to great heights within the Royal Court he held a lot of influence and made a vast number of enemies. It was these enemies who held him responsible for loss of lands in France and ultimately sent him to exile. He never made it to exile as he was murdered on the way and his body thrown overboard to be washed up at a later date near Dover. Alice arranged for his body to be buried in Suffolk.
