Geocache Description:

Union Cemetery is located in North Smithfield, on Rte 146A. There is ample parking at Globe Park, but take care in crossing the road. On this journey, you will be navigating your way through the cemetery in order to reveal the final cache location. As always, treat the grounds with respect and keep your hunting to daylight hours.

To successfully log this cache, you will need to have a comfortable knowledge in projecting waypoints. If you're not a pro at this, it's ok - you'll get some practice here. The calculated waypoints should be on target, but in reality you'll just need to get pretty close as further information provided will direct you to the exact location.

All distances are in feet and all directions are true bearings. If you need to convert the distance to miles, you can divide the answers by 5280.

A printout of this page is highly recommended for scribbling on, so you probably should bring one. So that means you should bring a pen too. You may want to bring a calculator if you're not so good with numbers, as there will be some math involved.

This area is Union Village and was once known as Bank Village, as this is the site of the first bank in northern Rhode Island. At one time, a section of this cemetery was also referred to as the Bank Burial Ground. Once you've arrived at the listed coordinates, your journey begins...

THE MOWRY MONUMENT

This monument documents the family history of one of the original settlers of Rhode Island, Nathaniel Mowry. It is even said that his father, Roger Mowry, was a cousin of Roger Williams. This details the lineage from Roger down to the descendant who constructed this monument, Arlon Mowry. You will be required to gather some information from this monument in order to continue. Also note that this is a waymark (WM4ZCV) that you can log if you so desire.

The first three projections will all have information from this site. Be sure that you gather all necessary information from this monument before continuing. Fill in the blanks according to the instructions and keep in mind that only one of the three projections will be complete. The other two will be completed later on.

PROJECTION I
              ' °
____ ____ ____ @ ____ ____ ____
  A B C D E F

PROJECTION II
              ' °
____ ____ ____ @ ____ ____ ____
  G H J K L M

PROJECTION III
              ' °
____ ____ ____ @ ____ ____ ____
  N P Q R S T

To find these numbers, start at the north side of the monument and work around the monument in a counterclockwise direction. The answers are all in chronological order in order to simplify finding the answers.

NORTH SIDE

Roger Mowry

A = (Number of Generations of Roger Mowry's Descendants) / 2

B = Third digit of the year Roger Mowry arrived from England

C = Number of letters in the name of Roger's third child

D = Fourth digit in the year Thomas was born

WEST SIDE

Nathaniel Mowry

E = Last two digits in the year Nathaniel was born, added together

F = Number of letters in Johannah's maiden name

G = To be determined later

H = Number of children born before Henry

Henry Mowry

J = Number of children older than Uriah

Uriah Mowry

K = Uriah's oldest child's day of birth

L = To be determined later

SOUTH SIDE

Jonathan Mowry

M = Fourth digit in the year Anna was born

N = To be determined later

Caleb Mowry

P = The digit noted just before the year 1818

Barney Mowry

Q = The number of children of Barney and Urania

EAST SIDE

Arlon Mowry

R = The day of Harriet's birth

S = To be determined later

T = The number of letters in the first name of the author mentioned

At this point, you will have all of the information required to continue. From your current location at the Mowry Monument, project a new waypoint using the distance and bearing listed as Projection I and move on to that location.

WAYPOINT I

At this new location you will find another monument that is more impressive than the ones surrounding it. At this monument, you will complete the two missing numbers for Projection II. On this monument, you can find a name (not the last name) that you should be overly familiar with by now. Use this person's information to find the following:

G = The number of letters in this person's first name

L = The third digit in this persons's year of death

You should now have all of the information to continue on to the next location. From your current position, project a waypoint using the distance and bearing from Projection II.

WAYPOINT II

This is the final resting place of many members of the Arnold clan, most notably this gentleman - Peleg Arnold. Peleg Arnold, a Brown University graduate, was at one time a Rhode Island delegate to the 1787-88 Continental Congress and was also Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court. He opened the first bank in this area (mentioned earlier) and was its first president. Also, he opened and ran the Peleg Arnold Tavern, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

From his stone, you can determine the final two answers for Projection III.

N = The month of his death (in numerical format) X 2

S = The second digit of his age minus the first digit of his age

You now have all of the information to continue on to the next location. From your current position, project a waypoint using the distance and bearing from Projection III.

WAYPOINT III

From your position, face the large tree near you. There should be a pair of stones in front of you. This is the Philbrick plot, a peaceful location that is of no significance, but what I found to be a serene resting place. These two stones will provide all of the necessary information to continue. This is much like the information gathered at the Mowry Monument, as you will be continuing with an incomplete projection, to be determined at the next location.

PROJECTION IV
              ' °
____ ____ ____ @ ____ ____ ____
  a b c d e f

PROJECTION V
              ' °
____ ____ ____ @ ____ ____ ____
  g h j k m n

RIGHT STONE

a = The difference of the last two digits in the year Norris died

b = The number of letters in his wife's second name

c = The number of times that the letter E occurs in his wife's full name

d = The fourth digit in the year Norris died

e = The day of his wife's death minus two

LEFT STONE

f = The last digit in of the day that Edgar died

g = To be determined later

h = The last two digits in the year of Edgar's death minus the first two digits in the year of his death

j = The number of words in the first line of Edgar's epitaph

k = The cube root of Mary's day of death

m = To be determined later

n = The fourth digit in Mary's year of death multiplied by 2

You now have all of the information to continue on to the next location. From your current position, project a waypoint using the distance and bearing from Projection IV.

WAYPOINT IV

In this new area, you will be looking for the large Aldrich monument. You will now be able to complete Projection V and some of the final Projection VI by using the information on this monument.

PROJECTION VI
              ' °
____ ____ ____ @ ____ ____ ____
  p q r s t u

g = The third digit in the year Mary died

m = The third digit of the year Daniel was born

p = To be determined later

q = The last digit of the year Susan M died

r = The number of burials noted on this monument

s = The fourth digit in the year Julia died

t = To be determined later

u = The third digit of the year Albert died

WAYPOINT V

This is my favorite section of the cemetery. Most of the stones here are older and the seclusion is nice. You will be looking for our friend Simon, whose damaged gravestone is embedded in concrete. What can be read of the epitaph offers a glimpse of a certain supernatural mentality of many from that time in history. That alone makes Simon a notable stop on this tour.

p = The day Simon died divided by 2

t = The number of times that the letter S appears in both of his parents' names

You now have now completed the final waypoint and can use the the distance and bearing from Projection VI in order to locate the cache container. It can best be reached by continuing along the path not yet taken and requires only minimal bushwhacking. Please re-hide the container well in order to keep it from being seen.
