Geocache Description:

This cache and eight others in Upper Wharfedale and Langstrothdale form the Where Spheres Intersect series. Visit eight of the caches in the series to collect digits that form the grid reference for a ‘secret’ ninth cache.

Visit the main WSI series entry for full instructions.

Please do not give away the secret cache co-ordinates in your log entries.

John Greenwood of Gisburn surveyed Thomas Foster’s land here in May 1848. John was the younger brother and assistant of Christopher Greenwood the noted mapmaker who mapped many of England’s counties.

John himself was a highly respected maker of tithe maps and one source suggests that if all tithe maps were produced to his standards there may have been no market for the Ordnance Survey’s larger scale maps! John surveyed and mapped 55,000 acres in Yorkshire. The WSI series takes its name from the way in which GPS technology locates you to a spot on the ground. The title also conveys the notion of fields of knowledge and interest overlapping that makes us who we are and helps shape the landscape we are in.

Where Spheres Intersect is part of Geo Art Cache - a new series of geocaches created by artists, which entice you to explore different locations across North Yorkshire whilst experiencing different artforms along the way. Visit www.geoartcache.com to find out more.
