Hereford Castle - 2. St. Ethelbert's Well
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
A gentle walk linking up three nano caches around the boundaries of the old castle. Locating the caches should provide a fun challenge for all.
The caches need to be completed in the correct order to get the required information if you choose to do "Bartonsham - Pure Fresh Milk"
Hereford Castle was originally built as a motte and bailey and was destroyed by invading Welsh in 1055. The castle was restored and strengthened - being described by John Leland (antiquary 1503-1552) as "nearly as large as that of Windsor" and "one of the fairest and strongest in England". The castle sadly fell into disrepair and was eventually ordered to be dismantled in 1746.
The site is now a park, in the centre of the bailey a monument to Lord Nelson stands.
The park is a familiar landmark to the people of Hereford, most locals will have childhood memories of ball games, picnics and ice cream.
St Ethelbert came to a somewhat unpleasant end in the 8th Century. The Well is supposed to have sprung at the place where his body was rested before burial at the nearby cathedral. Tradition has it that people once placed needles into the spring and used them to cure ulcers!
The cache is a nano (you will need a pencil to sign the log)
If you are planning to do Bartonsham - Pure Fresh Milk, remember to take the important data with you (it will be in your hands). Please do not reveal any details of the hide in your logs.
This is a heavily muggled area, please use stealth and return the cache to its original position.
Congratulations to Ollewog&TashaCasha on being First to Find
