The Texas Spirit
Quest
is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near
cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the
many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before
us.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural communities
across Texas. This series will introduce you to many of them. The
cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries,
tombstones and local
lore.
According to one online source, there are at least 141
graves at this site, not including 20 or more that lack markers. It
remains in use, and in fact there were two visitors in the 20
minutes I was there, including one man who came to water some
flowers at a grave in the back. Some of the graves date back to the
1800s, and there are two extremely interesting headstones that are
worth a look: one in the shape of a mortar and pestle, accompanied
by some Masonic imagery, and one carved in the form of an upright
log with crossed axes (evidently a common type of marker for
members of the mysterious Woodmen of the World). At least one of
the members of the Goforth family for whom the local community is
named is buried here.
Across the road is a historical marker describing the history of
the small church.
You do not need to enter the site to find the cache.
Please send me any coordinate refinements you might come up
with...I averaged out the initial set as best I could, but there is
some fuzziness.
