Geocache Description:

Devil's Dyke is an Anglo Saxon earthwork that stretches 7 1/2 miles from the Fen edge at Reach across the Chalk Grassland at Newmarket finishing in the wooded clay ridges of Wooditton.

As you follow the trail you will learn more about this interesting monument and the land that surrounds it.

I'd not advise taking buggies due to the changes in elevation and uneven narrow pathways in places, also be aware that in parts the sides do get fairly steep. Oh and bring tweezers!

Welcome to Newmarket racecourses the home of horse racing, to your east you have the Rowley Mile with the splendid Millenium grandstand opened by The Queen in the year 2000.

If you now look to the west you have the July Course.

Charles I, who reigned from 1625 to 1649, had the first grandstand built on this Heath.

Racing at Newmarket took off during the reign of Charles II after he was restored to the throne in 1660. He had a passion for the sport and moved the royal court to Newmarket every year.

Charles established the Town Plate, the first horserace ever run in Britain under written rules. It still takes place on the July Course every August.

Charles’s favourite hack was called Old Rowley, a nickname that was also given to the king himself. Hence the Rowley Mile Racecourse got its name.
