Geocache Description:

The Sea Venture under the command of Admiral Sir George Somers was leading a squadron of seven ships from England to Jamestown, Virginia with supplies and settlers when a hurricane blew her off course. On July 28, 1609 the crew and passengers were grateful to spot land. They had suffered severe damage from the storm. Sir George Somers grounded the ship a half mile off St. Catherine’s point. All passengers and crew – 150 of them - were able to make it to land and were able to bring much of the ship’s cargo with them before it broke up and sank.
These first settlers in Bermuda built two small ships named Deliverance and Patience and in May of 1610 all but three men sailed to Jamestown. On their arrival they found only 60 survivors out of the 500 settlers left in Jamestown the previous year. Attacks by Indians and poor crops had caused the demise of the 440. After leaving all the supplies they had brought with them, Sir George returned to Bermuda and lived the rest of his life on the island. When he died his body was returned to England however his heart and entrails were buried in St. George’s.
Edmund Downing, an American working at the Naval Station as a civilian, told me that he had a keen interest in locating the Sea Venture because one of his relatives was on the ship. He spent many hours researching and diving, and in 1958 he found the wreck lying on a shoal in 30 feet of water. A Smithsonian representative and a local authority made a positive identification of the site after unearthing a stone jug, clay pipe, and a vase of that period and taking timer measurements.
The monument nearby was placed in memory of the Virginia Company Officers, Adventurers, Colonists and Mariners who were on the Sea Venture.
