There are several areas of open
space around Heswall and Thurstaston on the Wirral peninsula. The
largest is the Heswall Dales, an area of dry, sandy heathland
overlooking the River Dee. It has the status of both Site of
Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Local Nature Reserve (LNR).
Within this SSSI lies 'The Dungeon', a small tree-lined river
valley cut into the hillside, and the site of this cache. The
Dungeon defies its name, being a beautiful spot, and is popular
with walkers and part of several circular walks. A footpath at the
bottom of this small valley leads down onto the Wirral Way. An
Earthcache is also situated at this location (GC13043).
While The Dungeon is suitable for all the family, it does have some
very steep slopes (keep an eye on children and dogs) and can become
quite muddy after rain, so please be careful and wear appropriate
footwear and clothing. The cache is a click-lock box containing a
logbook, Zelda the Zebra trackable, and various swag; these include
1st, 2nd and 3rd To Find badges, so please take the appropriate
badge if you are one of the first three to find the cache. Also, if
taking any item please replace with something of similar or greater
value or appeal. Footpaths lead to The Dungeon from a number of
places, so access and parking is easily available, the most obvious
parking being beside the church in Thurstaston Village, Oldfield
Road in Heswall, and the carpark at Wirral Country Park.
IMPORTANT!! As The Dungeon is an SSSI please take special
care when looking for the cache. You do not need to leave the main
path/route through The Dungeon to find it. The cache is also quite
close to water so please ensure it is placed fully back into the
position you found it (held in place with a piece of rock) to
prevent it getting wet or damaged.
Cache placed with kind permission of the Senior Ranger, Wirral
Coast.
Please post a photo with your log if you can.
Good luck!!
