During the golden age of radio, many of the popular programs were the mysteries. Each one brought its own spin to the life of a gumshoe or an undercover good guy. With a sidekick or a dame to share along in the adventure, most aired 30 minutes once each week usually with a mention to stay tuned next week, cliff hanging the program and keeping the audience wanting more. As today stations like ABC, CBS, NBC or the NBC Blue Network made their money on the commercials however, many were incorporated into the shows directly through the actors and actresses promoting them. Sponsors ranging from body soaps, floor cleaning products, toothpastes, menswear, and unlike today both beer and cigarette companies were major advertisers.
From 1949 to 1953 in radio Richard Diamond, played by David Meyer was one of the more laid back detectives, and a signing gumshoe. He started as OSS agent and then as a New York City private detective. His show would normally end with a serenade to his girlfriend Helen. During the program Detective Diamond would usually feel the butt of a gun and wake up with Lt. Levinson helping him with the case. The 30 minute show was aired weekly on NBC then to move to ABC in 1951 and CBS in 1953 and sponsored by Camel cigarettes when on ABC and Rexall on CBS.
