Geocache Description:

Well I HAD to hide at least one of the S.A.R.T. caches in the rocks, right? (Don't skip this one though! Your kid's feet will still be on the DIRT when they make the grab. (hint, hint) No need to come face to face with spiders, scorpions and snakes while drifting through endless piles of rocks. We've all been there, right?)

Another reason not to skip over this one....it's a BIG container and full of kid's swag!

The city recently locked the big gate at the north end of the old bike path hugging the canal. (the gate at the south end of this trail has been locked forever) So now, you have to scamper down the hillside from the upper S.A.R.T. trail to access the caches in this area. There are 3 good trails to do this.....

Access trail #1: At the north end of the area. Waypoint: N33 41.133' W117 56.405'. Just at the end of the chain link fence at the top of the hillclimb from the steel & wooden bridge. This is the easiest of all the trails to go up and down on. I ride my mountain bike down and UP this trail without getting off. However, Dad can shuttle the kid's bikes up and down for them. Folks on anything other than a mountain bike or BMX bike will have a difficult time riding up or down and will HAVE to walk their rides.

Access trail #2: Halfway between trails #1 & #3. This is a foot trail that is almost directly above the Ellis Bayside cache. (about 50 feet or so) You CAN'T take bikes down this trail unless you're a seasoned cyclocross racer. The trail is just south of the purple "Don't drink the landscape water" sign. It drops straight down to the largest & thickest wooden power pole (this is the big one that angles the wires back over the Santa Ana River). There is room to park the bikes just off the S.A.R.T. bikepath here. Once at the giant power pole, the cache is about 15 feet away. You should still be able to keep an eye on your bikes from GZ.

Access trail #3: This is at the south end of the area at the end of the gaurd rail. Waypoint N33 40.799' W117 56.543'. It is a steep and sandy descent for anyone with a bike. I drop in on it with my mountain bike, but its' too steep and loose to peddle back up. Dad would even have a tough time shuttling the kids bikes up and down this one. Families should use the northern access trail.
