A quick cache and dash on the Market Rasen/ Horncastle road. A quirky and interesting structure that's well worth a visit. This is one of many ROC bunkers in the county. Another is located on the road junction near Baumber and is in private hands having been sold at auction in May 2011 for £11500.
This is an example of one of the 1562 ROC (Royal Observer Corps) cold war bunkers constructed in the 1950s and 60s. ONLY TO BE USED IN THE EVENT OF NUCLEAR ATTACK.
The ROC itself was an evolution in 1941 to provide information for the RAF. It played a pivoital role in the Battle of Britain and later helping combat the V1 and V2 flying bomb.
With the cold war and threat of attack from the Soviets, the ROC changed role to reporting and monitoring under the UKWMO. (United Kingdom Warning and Monitoring Organisation.) This involved assessing and recording damage from air, chemical, nuclear or biological attack.
The underground bunker itself was designed for a 2 man crew to survive for up to a month. The crude concrete structure above is known as an "Orlit Post" and was a simple precursor to the significantly more complicated engineering below.
IF YOU CHOOSE TO HAVE SNOOP, PLEASE TAKE CARE ON THE STEPS, DON'T DO IT ALONE AND NOT RECOMMENDED FOR KIDS. OH, AND TAKE A TORCH
