Geocache Description:

The New Bedford Garden Club donated this beautiful
Rhododendron-encircled glacial kettle-hole pond to DNRT in 2003.
These 2.67 acres were originally given to the Garden Club by Gaffney Road resident Helen Wadsworth. For years the Garden Club maintained a walking trail around the pond and an access path from Gaffney Road. A narrow trail from the road leads to a loop trail around the kettle hole. The property remains a little jewel hidden in the woods. Anyone familiar with the history of glaciers within southeastern Massachusetts will find interesting the classic kettle pond which dominates this Reserve. The Dartmouth landscape has many such ponds, created when a large ice formation was contained within glacial sediment. As the ice melted, it created in its place a kettle shaped depression lined by relatively impermeable sediment and surrounded by conical hills of outwash material. Often these glacial features have been obliterated by roads, farms, gravel pits and residential or business development, so the New Bedford Garden Club Reserve offers a unique opportunity to see a small example of this kettle landscape. The short trail that loops around this pond is filled with a variety of wetland shrubs such as Blueberry, Sweet Pepper, and Red Maples. At the southern end of the trail, large ornamental Rhododendrons tower over the trail. These bloom in June.
**Park on northwest side of Gaffney Road, just past Smiths Way and before the Gaffney Road landing. Take care NOT to block the access to the private garage adjacent to this property. Park as close to the telephone pole as possible, as the trail entrance is about 15' from there. Look for orange flagging tape at the entrance and toward the trail. **Please head straight down the path AFTER the dedication plaque and DNRT welcome sign. The well worn crossing path that runs right and left near the plaque is clearly marked Private Property/No Trespassing; please stay off and respect our neighbors property.
DNRT's website contains information on this reserve and others as well as trail guides. (visit link)
