Geocache Description:

The Ridge Hill Reserve consists of 4 parcels totaling 210 acres on the northern boundary of Dartmouth. The property include the 38-acre Jason Phillips Mill Site, the 85-acre Ridge Hill Reserve, the 35-acre Barzabiel Washburn Reserve and the 52-acre Ridge Hill Expansion property. The land, most of it wooded upland, lies just south of the Copicut Reservoir between the Copicut and Shingle Island Rivers. The Reserve land abuts the 14,000-acre Southeast Mass Bio- Reserve, and is very close to several other protected properties within Dartmouth.
The Ridge Hill Reserve includes beautiful pitch pines and hemlocks, white pines and mature beech stands. It also includes one of the highest points in Dartmouth. Visitors should watch for lady slippers in the late spring, blueberries and huckleberries in late summer and many different species of birds and plants.
Most of the trails begin on the Arabia Sampson Path, a woods road named after the Arabia Sampson Homestead nearer to the Copicut Reservoir. The green loop runs to the top of the ridge, where it turns west and becomes a narrow footpath near the Copicut Reservoir. It follows the topography of the hillside, and may be considered a more challenging path than the other trails. The blue path is a shorter loop trail that winds among the low bush blueberry and huckleberry. The orange loop provides a view down into a small valley under the young beech trees.

**From the parking lot take the green trail to the little meadow trail markers sign post. From the meadow you can take the green trail out the Arabian Sampson Path, cross the gas lines, and pick up the red trail near the reservoir. You can take the red trail all the way from the little meadow, but it will be very wet and muddy in the wetland areas.
The walk out is a little over a mile one way, but the views of the trees and flowers, and the sound of birdsong is worth the trip! The cache is located off a cleared main side trail that leads to part of the reservoir and the homestead.

You can obtain more information and a trail map from the DNRT website. (visit link)

Cache is a small Decon container with a pencil and log inside. PLEASE SHUT TIGHTLY, and replace as found. FTF prize is a Geopin from my Geocoin a month club collection.

**IF YOU CHOSE TO GO OFF TRAIL AND EXPLORE, PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB THE WALLS OF THE RUINS!!! You can view the stone remains of the homestead on both sides of the trail from the cache location! ALSO THERE IS AN OLD WELL THAT IS ROPED OFF...PLEASE USE CAUTION AND WATCH CHILDREN IN THIS AREA.**

*Placed with permission of Land Management and DNRT.

DNRT Reserves are open Dawn to Dusk.
