During the golden age of radio, many of the popular programs were the mysteries. Each one brought its own spin to the life of a gumshoe or an undercover good guy. With a sidekick or a dame to share along in the adventure, most aired 30 minutes once each week usually with a mention to stay tuned next week, cliff hanging the program and keeping the audience wanting more. As today stations like ABC, CBS, NBC or the NBC Blue Network made their money on the commercials however, many were incorporated into the shows directly through the actors and actresses promoting them. Sponsors ranging from body soaps, floor cleaning products, toothpastes, menswear, and unlike today both beer and cigarette companies were major advertisers.
Sam Spade was a spin off from The Maltese Falcon. Sam along with Lurene Tuttle as Effie Perrine, his perfect secretary and John McIntire was Lt. Dundy. He meticulously made a report on every episode as the case progressed. During each episode Effie would find out what was developing with Sam. Wise cracking and upper cutting could be possible in each of the episodes. Running on CBS until 1950 when the creator was investigated for possible Communist Ties, such was the times during the McCarthy era. The sponsor of this show was a hair care product called Wildroot Hair Oil.
