Yesler Swamp, which serves as the outlet for Yesler Creek, is still feeling the effects of the sawmill that was established here over 150 years ago. This historic swamp was once a holding area for logs out of the Yesler Sawmill. Because Yesler Swamp lies in a basin, most of this damage is not apparent to the casual observer. Like the wetlands themselves, there is more going on beneath the surface. A closer look will reveal the ivy that chokes the trunks of the poplar trees, and the thick stands of invasive grass deeper in the wetland.
Friends of Yesler Swamp and the UW Botanic Gardens are working together to restore the native plants of this historic swamp, to protect and conserve swamp wildlife, and to minimize human impact on the wetlands. Community members worked together to complete the west and east trails that now lead all the way down to the lagoon. As part of these restoration efforts, there is a proposal for a handicapped-accessible boardwalk wetland trail. The trail would offer views of the wetlands, the beaver lodge and the lagoon, while protecting wildlife by directing human foot traffic away from these sensitive areas. Friends of Yesler Swamp and UW Botanic Gardens welcome input and support from the wider community who enjoy the trail.
The information on the cache page up to this point was taken from the Friends of Yesler Swamp website.
Enjoy your walk on the west trail to the water’s edge. The cache is a small cammoed lock-n-lock which can be reached without stepping off the trail. The open hours are from dawn until dusk.
