Geocache Description:

The cache location is very close to the main road side - but there is no need to stop on the main road itself! There is a small turn off just past it that will bring you back round to the cache location.

Coinneach Odhar, or ‘The Brahan Seer’ was a worker on the Brahan estate who was renowned for his gift of second sight. After enraging the Countess of Seaforth by revealing that her husband, who was in Paris had a mistress, he was accused of witchcraft and burned in a barrel of tar. Before his death he made his final prediction which foretold the downfall of his accusers, the Seaforth-MacKenzies.

He saw "far into the future" when the last of the male line would be "both deaf and dumb." The last, Francis Humbertson Mackenzie, became deaf after an attack of scarlet fever; later, also dumb.

"He himself shall sink into the grave, and the remnant of his possessions shall be inherited by a white-coiffed lassie from the East who will kill her sister." When her father died, Lady Mary Hood, (Later to become Lady Stewart-Mackenzie) returned wearing the traditional Indian white Coife of mourning.

In 1823 Lady Hood was in control of a pony carriage near Brahan accompanied by her sister, Lady Caroline Mackenzie. The ponies bolted and the carriage overturned. Lady Caroline Mackenzie was thrown out and died of her injuries, thereby fulfilling the Brahan Seer’s final prophecy. The monument to Lady Caroline MacKenzie is said to mark the spot where the tragedy occurred.

Thanks to Andrew Matheson, the estate owner and direct descendant of the Hooded Lassie, for giving permission to place a cache here.
