This bridge spans the Wakarusa River. It replaced the original bridge, which was said to have caused previous floods. Unfortunately, the town of Wakarusa fared no better with the new bridge in place.
May 6, 2007, which was the same weekend as the destructive Greensburg tornado, saw the river rising and rising from torrential rains west of the area. The entire town was evacuated and eventually flooded. The water receded, leaving mud and muck behind. Town residents were devastated. Two meals a day were prepared and served from the Church’s parking lot. (Keep in mind the Church itself had 6” of muddy water in it.) Help from the Shawnee Heights Fire Dept and Auxiliary, Red Cross, Salvation Army and Wakarusa Presbyterian Church members unaffected by the flood was greatly appreciated. Some town folks are still dealing with the repercussions from that week.
Genesis 9:9-14 –
“Then God told Noah. . .’that I will never again send another flood to destroy the earth. And I seal this promise with this sign: I have placed my rainbow in the clouds as a sign of my promise until the end of time, to you and to all the earth.’”
