A quick little hike with a history lesson thrown in.
From the first occupation of Fort Dummer in 1724 for 30 years or more, a scout path was used for trade with a fort in Colrain, MA. This trail led from Fort Dummer up this small stream called Venter's Brook, to what is now South Main Street, then SW to Guilford Center and Green River, then South to Colrain. On March 29, 1748 a small band from Fort Dummer set out to procure oars and paddles from Colrain. A half hour into their journey, they encountered a party of Indians. One of the members of the expedition, Moses Cooper, was struck down, but lived to reach the fort. The rest of the group fought the Indians while retreating along this brook. Shortly into their retreat, Joshua Wells was killed. Just prior to reaching the fort, Lt John Sargent was killed and scalped. His son Daniel was captured and later taken to Canada where he remained several years before returning to Fort Dummer. Ahhh, the good old days!!!!
