A CACHE
Um dos mais escondidos habitantes da Serra de Sintra é a víbora cornuda, uma espécie venenosa e até letal, dependendo da quantidade de veneno injectado e do local da mordedura, que cresce até aos 70 cm e que vive normalmente em zonas pedregosas e com solos arenosos, (como acontece em algumas extensões da montanha).
Esta espécie diurna vive quase sempre no chão, escondida e à caça, especialmente durante o dia, também já foi vista nos ramos de árvores, ao sol. Apesar de se tratar de um animal com locomoção lenta, investe muito rapidamente, não dando grandes hipóteses à vítima de fugir.
Este animal alimenta-se de lagartos, aves e de pequenos mamíferos.
Encontra-se em vias de extinção e, por isso, é absolutamente necessário respeitar os seus habitats, sobretudo ter cuidado com as viagens de carro dentro da Serra... é que a víbora cornuda tem como um dos principais motivos de morte o atropelamento.

THE HORNED VIPER
One of the most reclusive inhabitants of the Sintra Mountain is the horned viper, a venomous and even lethal reptile, depending on the amount of venom injected and the location of the bite, which grows up to 70 cm and normally lives in rocky areas and sandy soils (as in some areas of this mountain).
This diurnal species lives mainly on the ground, hiding and hunting, but it has also been seen in tree branches, lying in the sun. Despite its slow mobility, the viper invests very quickly, without allowing its intended victim a great chance of escape. This animal feeds on lizards, birds and small mammals.
It is an endangered species, and so it's absolutely necessary to respect their habitat. Be especially aware of car journeys inside the Mountain... trampling being one of the leading causes of horned viper deaths.
