Ubicada en el barrio Aguirre en Salinas, La Central Aguirre fue uno de los complejos azucareros más grandes del siglo XX. A la misma vez era una de las más al día en tecnología para su época. En el 1973 la central pasa a manos de la Corporación Azucarera. Con muchos intentos fallidos, la central cerró sus operaciones en el 1990.

La antigua Central Aguirre de Salinas se convertirá en un museo de la historia de la caña como parte de un plan que presentó el alcalde de Salinas.
