Great Roman Holiday
Beginning in the third Century B.C., The biggest festival in all of ancient Rome was Saturnalia.
Saturnalia was a week long celebration occurring around the time of the winter solstice. The festival began at the temple of Saturn, chief god of pagan Rome, where the statue of Saturn was unbound, and left untied throughout the entire week's festivities.
All over the empire, people would exchange presents and decorate the streets and their homes with bells and candles and boughs of evergreens and holly.
Music and dancing were everywhere. This stone tablet containing the lyrics to an ancient Saturnalia carol was discovered in the Pompeiian ruins.
Roughly translated, it reads:
Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all along the aquaduct ... Oh what fun it is to ride in a two horse open chariot.
