Geocache Description:

This is part of a series of caches on the Wainwright Dodds.

It would be difficult to make the case for High Hartsop Dodd to be a separate fell from a study of the map alone. The case can be strongly made from the vicinity of Brothers Water. Wainwright considered it distinct enough from its parent fell of Little Hart Crag to give it its own chapter.

In the book ‘A Dictionary of Lake District Place-Names’ Diana Whaley suggests that the name relates to the Hart, or deer; and Sop, which is a 'rounded, blind valley.' A Dodd is commonly a steep or rounded, compact summit. The High relates to its position up the valley, rather than its height.

The cache is hidden about 70metres beyond the cairn in the direction of Little Hart Crag, slightly to the east of the path. It is hidden beneath a flat slab of rock. There is no tell tale rock hiding it. Please see the spoiler photo as I’ve no wish for you to DNF. As ever the cache is a tat free zone.

The cache is placed with the permission of Stephen Downson, National Trust Area Ranger for Ullswater
