Geocache Description:

A sights of interest cache by StealthRT

There is a lot of history in Vinland. This cache is meant to give you a reason to take a quick break and explore some of this history.

You can see the cache in this picture. It's right there. Can you find it?

You will find three locations of note that are in very close proximity.

At N 38 50.419 W 095 10.967, you will find a prominent sign that will give you information about one of the buildings in Vinland that is on the National Register of Historic Places, the Vinland Presbyterian Church. The church was erected in 1878. Not only that, but the Vineland Presbyterian Church once was pastored by James Naismith, the founder of basketball. During those years, Naismith also worked at KU as chaplain.

At N 38 50.418 W 095 10.994, you will see a marker dedicated to the establishment of the Vinland Valley Aerodrome. You will also be able to see the Vinyard Vally Aerodome which is still in operation today. Depending on when you are here, you may get to see one or more planes flying very low overhead.

Finally, at N 38 50.406 W 095 10.973, you will see another building on the National Register of Historic Places, the Coal Creek Library. This is the oldest library in the state of Kansas. I imagine this library also holds the record for the oldest librarian. Martha Smith has been became the librarian in 1926. She just retired this year (2011) at the age of 106. The library has limited hours, but is open seasonally on Sundays between 1pm and 4pm.

There was a great spot for this cache that seems obvious, but reportedly has extreme poison ivy seasonally. Hence, the final resting place for the cache avoids that spot. Please to not park on North 700 Road to retrieve the cache. There is plenty of parking available by turning south onto East 1719 Road.

This cache is modeled after the methodology of The Raven’s Country Cross series. Thanks to buzzkill2 for supplying the cache container. Thanks also to Paul Caviness for his dedication to the community and help with this cache.
