Geocache Description:

One of the bigger locales of this type in the Smiths Falls area.
Keep in mind that from the area where you parked to this location was all vacant up to 1999.
Once again, please be respectful of where you are and any muggles that you may pass.

Some of the area's more noteable resting places are:

Scout "Harold Whitcomb", who at the age of 15, saved Mary Hunter from drowning at the Whitcomb cottage on Rideau Lake, August/1911. Harold received Scouting's Silver Cross for "gallantry with considerably risk". He also earned the Royal Canadian Humane Society's Bronze Metal for Bravery - "Awarded to those involved in a noteworthy rescue". These awards were presented to Harold in 1912. The Harold Whitcomb story and awards are on display at our 2nd Smiths Falls Scouting Museum at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Able Russell Ward - one of the founders of Smiths Falls. I am told that this headstone, which sits in the area to the left of the office, has the letters UEL (United Empire Loyalist) on the stone. I am also told that United Empire Loyalists were people who in some way participated in the War of Independance in 1776. Historians tell me that there is no way that Mr. Ward could have been a member of UEL as he wasn't born until 20 years later! Though he may well be the child or grandchild of a member.

Lavenia Mirrick, the wife of Able Russell Ward. Directly related to those who founded Merrickville and also the person behind the names Lavenia Street and Merrick Street. Also of note, Able Street, Russell Street, and the fact that at one time, a part of Smiths Falls was named Wardsville.
