The Coastal Issues Committee of
the Ecology Action Centre would like to thank all of you who
attended our second annual Earth Day CITO event on April 23rd,
2011. This was the second event in our 40 Days of Action" campaign
to celebrate our 40th anniversary. For this year's event (2011) we
chose a beautiful but neglected piece of coastline in Halifax
Harbour in dire need of a clean-up. Navy Island Cove, a small inlet
in Bedford Basin is a quiet piece of still water that contains one
of the last, albeit small, essential pieces of salt marsh in
Halifax Harbour. These gems of the coastal environment are havens
for fish larvae, invertebrates, shore birds and terrestrial species
alike. In essential areas they provide buffers from high energy
waves, help filter runoff and act as a nursery for a wide variety
of species.
The event was a huge success, we hauled an estimated two tons of
garbage and recyclables out of the woods and off the shoreline.
Some of the stranger items we found were a toilet, a refrigerator,
a creepy doll and a marine firefighters respirator (which some of
us thought was a flamethrower). Prizes were won by some but fun was
had by all.
If you are planning a reduced emission trip to the cache, there are
5 buses that can bring you within a 2 minute walk of the cache
location; the 64 (Akerley), 84 (Glendale), 85 (Downsview [via
MacKay Bridge]), 87 (Downsview) and 185 (Metrolink Sackville). Have
fun caching and remember the "Trash Out" part of CITO and try to
grab something that doesn't belong anywhere you go.
