The designation of stratotypes Zumaia is a recognition of the highest international level in addition to the category of'GEOSITES' that already has the outcrop as a world geological inventory of UNESCO.
Los clavos y sus respectivas leyendas atestiguan que Zumaia es el referente internacional de dos momentos clave de la historia del Paleoceno, el periodo geológico inmediatamente posterior a la extinción de los dinosaurios y que abarca un periodo que va desde hace 65 millones de años hasta hace 55 millones de años. La designación de los estratotipos de Zumaia es un reconocimiento de máximo nivel internacional que se suma a la categoría de 'geosite' que ya tiene el afloramiento como punto de interés geológico mundial del inventario de la UNESCO.
