Chapter 2

Two days after the body had been found Inspector David MacPearson and John Talbot were walking into the coroner’s lab. approx. 45 minutes after the coroner had rang David and told him he had finished the post mortem.

The tongueless body was lying on the table but it was not as how David and John had last seen her. The coroner started his report with ‘The tongue was cut out after death’

David was slightly stunned he was sure that would have been the cause of death ‘After’ he questioned.

‘Yes’ the coroner acknowledged and explained to them how he knew it was after death. Then he explained the cause of death was an injection of insulin putting the body into a hyper state which the heart could not cope with.

‘That’s a big percentage of the population when you take in medical staff, pharmacists and people who have diabetes’ David exclaimed.

‘You may be able to narrow it down as there was soil found below her nails’ the coroner offered.

‘Just you’re run of the mill soil or something special’ John quizzed

‘Now John you know that’s not my department, I’ve sent it over to the forensic lab with urgent marked on paper work.’ The coroner teased as he smiled at the two detectives.

‘Anything else we need to know?’ David MacPearson asked.

‘That’s it’ the coroner responded.

David nodded as him and John walked back out of the lab.

‘A needle in a haystack then unless something comes up in the soil’ David muttered as they started climbing the stairs.

John nodded in agreement as saying ‘A visit or a phone call to the forensic lab?”

‘A visit it’s on the way back to the station.’

The two men opened the doors to the car and drove out of the car park beside the building that held the coroner’s labs and offices. The drive to the forensic lab didn’t take more than 15 minutes and a few minutes after that they were in the office of Janet who was one of the senior forensic scientists.

‘Tell us you have something good for us?’ David questioned more hoping than believing but then when he seen the smile on Janet’s face he knew they had a clue.

Congratulations to mcc42 on being the FTF.
