Geocache Description:

Go directly to gaol, do not pass go, do not miss the Old Kilmore Gaol!

The Old Kilmore Gaol was erected in 1857 and served as a Victorian maximum security prison from 1859 until 1891, when it was decommissioned and used as a butter factory and then became a private residence in 1968. The gaol saw many escapes and uprisings over its 32 year period of use.

Contrary to popular belief, Ned Kelly was never actually a prisoner here, however his uncle, Jimmy Quinn, was incarcerated in the gaol during a 4-month period from December 1856 for being in possession of stolen cattle.

In 1924 the gaol watchtower was removed and re-erected on Monument Hill (see GC94BB Immortal) to commemorate the passing-through of the area of Hume and Hovell, in 1924, and the naming of the Hume Highway.

Today, the gaol is used as an Auction House for antique goods and although it still has maintained its original bluestone walls and intimidating appearance, the interior of the jail was renovated during the time it served as a butter factory.

You are looking for a 450ml Sistema sandwich container, painted matt black, containing a log, pen and a small number of swaps. Cache is NOT magnetic. Please ensure that the zip-lock bag and the cache container are both well sealed prior to replacing into the hide.

The difficulty rating may increase during start and finish times for school, so please use MAXIMUM stealth at these times! Thanks to local cacher, Kilmore Harper, for watching over my cache for me .....
