Geocache Description:

Jerusalem Township, Maine. Jerusalem, Israel

First I would like to credit the University of New Hampshire Library of Digital Collections Initiative for the topo map file. Also, a very big thank you to Mainiac1957 for bringing Jerusalem to my attention, enabling me to add another to the Maine World Tour series of caches. Welcome to Jerusalem Township, Maine. Or actually, what today is Carrabassett Valley, Maine. I wasn't able to determine how the township got it's name of Jerusalem, however the area is well known for a number of interesting points, not the least of which is Sugarloaf Mountain. More on that in a moment. Carrabassett Valley was known as Jerusalem Township...T3 R2...up until October 26, 1971 when residents voted 21-13 to incorporate and create the town of Carrabassett Valley, Maine. Some notable points are that the community is home to Carrabassett Valley Academy , a private academy founded in 1982, specializing in alpine skiing, snowboarding and freestyle. Seth Wescott, Julie Parisien and Bode Miller can be counted as notable athletes and alumni of the academy. Sugarloaf Mountain, peaking at 4,237 feet is second to Maine's highest peak, Katahdin. Home to Maine's largest ski area resort, Sugarloaf, the first trail was cut in the summer of 1950 by Amos Winter and a number of volunteers and named "Winter's Way". In the summer of 1972, the "Mountain of Pure Rock",WTOS-FM, started broadcasting with their transmitter and antenna located on Sugarloaf. Sugarloaf, the mountain and the ski resort are certainly iconic of Maine. According to Wikipedia, Jerusalem, Israel is the holy city for the three major religions in the world: Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Obviously, space and time do not allow for a complete history of Jerusalem, it is interesting to note that Jerusalem has been captured and recaptured 44 times, attacked 52 times, besieged 23 times and destroyed twice. The oldest part of the city, settled some 400 years before the birth of Christ, is one of the oldest cities in the world. The old walled city is divided into quarters, most notably Christian, Islamic and Jewish. The old city is also where The Western Wall is located, between the Islamic and Jewish Quarters on the Temple Mount. The name "Wailing Wall" most likely originated by Muslims, the term being used up until the 1920's. According to Biblical Old Testament, Jerusalam was established as the capital of the United Kingdom of Israel around 1000 BCE by King David. In Christianity, it has been a holy city since Christ was crucified around 30 CE according to the New Testament. In Sunni Islam, it remains the 3rd holiest city. I've been fortunate to see the old city, guided by a great friend and local political science teacher. Regardless of religion or if agnostic, it is an amazing city. Some other caches you may want to discover on the Maine World Tour series include Maine's World Tour, Cities, Belfast CG266GJ, Maine's World Tour, Cities, Frankfort CG23YAD, and Maine's World Tour, Counties, Egypt CG2B8PH. Enjoy! Congratulations to tandemstoker for a well-earned FTF!
