Geocache Description:

One of three caches we’ve placed in a mini-series-like fashion to highlight the importance of the New Zealand Geodetic Network. Approaching GZ, you will find three things: the cache, a geodetic marker, and a damn good view. The trig code is A2LL and formally known as “MT ALBERT NO 3”.

Trigonometric markers are important landmarks setup by surveyors and workers at Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) for the purpose of setting boundaries for property sections and roads, determining and measuring lengths, distances as well as altitudes, and monitoring any ground ‘deformation’ that occurs geographically. The most important of these markers number only a handful around the country and have dedicated GPS sites that are closed off from public access, usually within the boundary of airports or on top of important mountains. Beacons (trigs) are of next importance, and are either a painted concrete pillar that rises about 1 metre off the ground (like the one you will find near this cache) or are a four-legged metal/wooden structure with a multidirectional black and white marker at the apex of it.

We discovered this spot using a combination of Google Earth and the fantastic tool that LINZ provides - the “LINZ Data Service” (both are free), and the curiosity to explore more of the area after paying a visit to the “Albert’s Post” and “Look Out Below” geocaches. One of the quicker access points is from the southern entrance of Melrose Park along Mount Albert Road and follow the concrete, and then dirt, track until you reach GZ. Stunning views of Wellington City, the harbour, Baring Head, Ward Island and other various places can be seen from this 182 metre highpoint.

Please note the final is not in the gorse; don’t go searching there. The final is a micro container (previously a 200 ml Sistema, which when placed contained a logbook, pencil, geocaching notice, a few swag items, and a prize for the FTF). Please rehide it as well as possible because this is a rather popular walking and biking track.
