DOG TOWN
The population of Nevadaville was primarily comprised of three different ethnic groups, the Irish, the Cornish, and eventually the Chinese. People of different descent lived there also but in relatively smaller numbers. The Cornish and Irish were very clannish. There was constant rivalry for social dominance which resulted in fights in the saloons as well as isolation from the other groups and real discrimination. The Cornish had a slight advantage in this social struggle as the men were by far the more skillful miners of any of the workers. The groups lived in separate neighborhoods even in this small town. The area called Dog Town was down the road from the main street of Nevadaville in an easterly direction on the way to Central City. This lower end of town was the place where many of the people of any heritage besides the Irish and Cornish were located. The name Dog Town seems harsh by modern standards but was nonetheless the commonly used name.
