The Kilmore Racing Club has a proud history which encompasses both turf and harness racing.
Prior to 1850 horse racing at Kilmore was staged over rolling ground where courses were mapped between two points in a simple "out and back" design. That undulating character was retained when the track moved to it's present site in 1865 and is quite different from the flat tracks favoured by most Clubs. The Club in it's present form can be traced to 1900 and over the years has played host to all the champion jockeys, trainers and horses of their time.
Records show that trotting was conducted at Kilmore as early as 1896, but the first track of three and a half furlongs was built by voluntary labour in 1958. The determination of local identities of the day saw the installation of a half-mile track and in September 1961 the Kilmore Trotting Club was formed. This was followed in 1963 with the official registration of the Kilmore Trotting Club. The first Kilmore Pacing Cup was run in 1964 and is now regarded as one of the premier country cups in Australia. Previous winners of the event include champions such as Popular Alm, Koala King and Golden Reign. A state-of-the-art 1000 metre track was opened in 2000, and since then major infrastructure developments have continued to occur, such as lighting for night racing.
The magnificent Kilmore Trackside was officially opened in 1999. It sports a 300 seat Bistro offering panoramic views of the track and surrounds and is open every day for lunch and dinner. This facility is regarded as one of the best of its kind outside of metropolitan Melbourne. Further upgrades and improvements since its opening have ensured that Kilmore Trackside is the most popular entertainment spot in the region. Kilmore Trackside regularly hosts a wide variety of functions including Wedding Receptions, Club Meetings, Company Seminars, Birthdays as well as regular Live Bands and Ticket Shows.
Vale Vincent Knight, harness driver, who died in April 1991.
So, to the coordinates of GZ and the cache. You will need to count letters in words from the small Tribute Plaque unveiled by Hon N. Trezize, MP to work out the S37°17.XXX E144°57.YYY location of the cache.
To adjust the southing to the cache location, take the number of letters in the last word in the 5th line, multiply by the number of letters in the middle name of the late harness driver, Mr KNIGHT, add the result to the number of letters in the month the Tribute was relocated and then add 1 (just for good measure). Take this number and subtract it from the 3-figure southing decimal. This is your new southing decimal.
S37°17.XXX
Now, to adjust the easting to the cache location, take the number of letters from the last word of the 7th line, and subtract the number of letters in the 3rd word of the 5th line. Take the result and subtract from the easting decimal. This is your new easting decimal.
