Recreation center -
The first community gathering spot on Tancook was called Gideon Hall. It can still be seen today on the hillside, opposite side of the government wharf. Most islanders still remember the dances and gatherings that went on inside that building. After many years the building began to depreciate and was replaced in June 1976 with the Tancook Recreation Centre. It is a 40 x 60 structure and cost $55 000.00 to build.
The recreation center is used for many events.
At some times of the year it is open for a tourist information center if you have any questions. There are washrooms available if you wish to go in. If it is not open there are also picnic tables and outhouses available for your use and convenience.

School History -
The first school on Big Tancook opened its first doors on November 1, 1820 in a private home. Thomas Gibson was the schoolmaster.
In 1864 the first schoolhouse was built on the northern side of the island. It was located across the road from the present day building. This school was for grades primary to eleven.
Another school was located on the southern side of the island. This school was for grades primary to five. The two schools were named Northwest Cove and Southeast Cove Schools. In 1935 the population of the two schools was 85 students.
The Northwest Cove School was torn down and replaced by the present day one. It was built around 1950.
In 1967 grades 7 to 11 were sent by ferry to Chester and Southeast Cove School closed its doors forever. Northwest Cove School became Big Tancook Elementary with grades primary to 6. There were two teachers. The school population in 1967 was 33 students.
In 1992 the school became a facility for grades primary to 5. There was one teacher. Big Tancook Elementary School is one of the last one room schools in Canada. Population had an average of 10 students a few years back. At present time there are 10 students. The lowest it had been down to was 3 at one point. Present teacher and principal is Elizabeth Sutherland.
