Geocache Description:

Located in the semi-arid South Australian mallee Birds Australia Gluepot Reserve is considered by many to be one of the crown jewels in the Australia’s reserve system.

Gluepot Reserve is located 64 km north of Waikerie. The Reserve is open to visitors year-round. Entry fees are payable upon arrival. Camping is available. Visitors need to be self-sufficient, and are advised to check local conditions prior to heading out on the dead end dirt track to Gluepot.

The Reserve is part of the largest block of intact mallee left in Australia. Gluepot is Australia's largest community managed and operated conservation reserve. Gluepot is a birdwatchers' paradise with 190 species recorded including 6 species that are nationally threatened, Black-eared Miner, Malleefowl, Red-lored Whistler, Regent Parrot, Scarlet-chested Parrot and Striated Grasswren. 53 species of reptiles and 12 species of bats, some of which are nationally threatened have also been identified.

Gluepot is rapidly becoming a centre for scientific research. Each year Australian universities, research institutions and international students attend this 50,000 ha area of virgin mallee scrub, 40km x 14 km, to conduct research projects regarding the problems of land degradation, loss of biodiversity and environmental issues.

The original station buildings have been upgraded to house volunteer rangers, and to provide accommodation for researchers. A Visitor Centre has been built and the shearing shed has been converted into a Training Centre. Gluepot Reserve has four campgrounds and has also established 14 walking trails and one driving trail. A Bureau of Meteorology weather station, and solar power system have been installed.

Geocachers are encouraged to take their time and explore the reserve. You will need to travel for over an hour from the nearest main road. It suggested that you consider overnight camping. Take a walk and enjoy the great outdoors. Take your binoculars and visit the 5 elevated bird hides strategically located around the Reserve. Visit the nearby Gluepot Visitor Centre. The cache is placed with the kind permission of reserve management and is in sight of the Ranger residence.

Visitors should aim to be self-sufficient. Before driving into Gluepot Reserve you will need:

Water. Bring sufficient water to cover your own drinking, cooking and washing needs. Water is a scarce resource at Gluepot Reserve. Riverland towns are unlikely to provide visitors with rain water, though treated domestic water is generally available.

Cooking. Only gas fires may be used. Gas bottles can be filled at the Waikerie Shell Service Station. No wood fires are permitted on the Reserve.

Lighting. Use gas or kerosene lamps. Take spare batteries for torches.

Vehicle fuel is available at the Waikerie Shell Service Station. Fuel is not available at Gluepot Reserve.

Food. Note that fruit fly control programs mean that all fresh fruit and vegetables such as potatoes, onions, capsicums and tomatoes may not be carried into the Riverland district from elsewhere. These food items may be purchased at Riverland towns such as Renmark, Waikerie or Morgan. Ice is not available at Gluepot Reserve so plan your food requirements accordingly.

Garbage bag. Visitors must remove all their own rubbish so bring garbage bags to take all your rubbish away.

Equipment. Bring your binoculars, field guides, camera, and vehicle spares. The Reserve's flat to undulating tracks are suitable for mountain bikes. Remember to carry a puncture repair kit.

Firearms and pets are not permitted on the Reserve.
