This cache is part of a series of caches highlighting the bridges that span the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in Clearfield County. This is a micro so requires that you bring your own pen or pencil. I have permission from the business owner for cachers to park and access GZ from his property. Please do not park anywhere other than the posted parking coordinates. Just a short walk to GZ.
Chinklacamoose (Chingleclamouche) is the name of the indian village located here and visited by C.F. Post while traveling to an Indian Council at Kuskuski in 1758. The later name, Clearfield, is said to get its name from clearings made by grazing bison along nearby creeks. Clearfield is the county seat for Clearfield county and is second only in population to DuBois. It was incorporated as a borough on April 21, 1840. It has a very diverified make up of businesses and industry, the most recent major addition is a new ethonol plant on the eastern side of town. It is also noted for one of the largest county fairs in the state with top name performers on stage all week. Prior to the construction of the Army Corps of Engineers Curwensville Dam upstream of Clearfield, the town was prone to spring floods as witnessed by several churches and buildings in town displaying high water marks. The bridge at GZ is the beginning of the only stretch of the Susquehanna River aaproved for trout stocking by the PA Fish Commission which they started in 2005. Old Town Sportsman Club had been stocking the river with trout prior to the fish commission.
