Geocache Description:

Looking for this cache will introduce you to a very odd sight - a large artillery gun under a wall!

Mega Scotland 2014

How this large artillery gun comes to be submerged (should that be ‘submured’?) is not particularly clear, and there has been quite a lot of local discussion about it over the years.

The gun is said to be one of a pair built into the wall, the other being now lost from sight. One of the older island residents recalls the two guns arriving in the late 1910s and sitting out beside the football pitch for many years. It is thought that 30 or 40 years later, when the time came to improve the sea defences by building a wall, the guns were simply buried into the wall’s foundations.

It’s an interesting little piece of local curiosity and not noticed by many people.

Thanks to well known local figure Sandy Morton for publishing photos at http://www.s1millport.com/memories/cannon-in-the-wall.html where more can be read about the mysterious gun.
