Geocache Description:

A small box at Tomont End.

Mega Scotland 2014

The obelisk-shaped monument at Tomont End was erected by the captain and officers of HMS Shearwater in memory of two young crewmen who drowned when the ship capsized in 1844. The inscription reads: “To the memory of Mr Charles D Cayley, aged 17 years, and Mr William N Jewall, aged 19 years, Midshipmen of HMS ‘Shearwater’. Promising young officers, drowned in the upsetting of their boat near this place, 17 May, 1844. This Monument is erected in token of their worth by: Captain Robinson and Officers of the above-named vessel.”

Near this point, marked on the OS map as the ‘Lady’s Grave’, are the remains of a Viking burial site linked to the Battle of Largs (1263).

There are picnic tables here and it makes a nice spot to stop and take in the view while cycling or walking around the island.

There is little motor traffic, but when seeking the geocache please beware of cyclists who are less easy to hear! Also, please do not disturb the stonework of the dry wall, the container is not on or in the wall.

Don’t forget to bring your own pencil.
