Geocache Description:

Once upon a time, more than 100 years ago, some "eastern financiers and railroad 'experts', working for John D. Rockefeller" wanted a railroad to go through near here, along the shores of what they called a trout stream.
They got their way, boring six tunnels through the canyon walls and avoiding the 'expensive' trestles suggested by railroad surveyor M. Q. Barlow, who had selected a route that avoided the steep, treacherous canyon. When the November floods swelled the 'trout stream' into a thundering torrent of whitewater, the railroad was wiped out. Starting in 1892 and continuing through the railroad’s demise in 1933, the effort to maintain the rail line required yearly battles to repair damage from rockslides and fall flooding. (HO scale-model railroad photo and historical information from http://www.robecanyon.org/History.html)

The cache brings you to the trail head for this portion of what is now the Robe Canyon Historic Park. A short jaunt down the hill will bring you to the old railroad grade and, eventually, the Stillaguamish River, the so-called 'trout stream'. There are three other caches down here, but be prepared for your GPSs to be less than helpful. At one time while I was down here, mine put me on the wrong side of the river!

Following the Stilly downstream will bring you to the old town site (marked by bricks on the ground) and two of the tunnels. Be forewarned -- the trail is closed roughly 1.2 miles in, about 2/10ths of a mile before the first (Tunnel #6), although many hikers choose to continue on. There is an active slide area between you at the end of the 'official' trail and the tunnel.

About this cache:
  • You're looking for a 30 cal. ammo box.
  • It can be accessed by a quick hop into the woods from the road, a bit west of the official trail head.
  • Hints and/or a spoiler photo will be added after FTF.
  • This is a popular area, so watch for muggles.
  • Bring in a bag and do a bit of CITO. There is a small amount of garbage around. I took some out when I placed this.
  • Please rehide this cache as you found it. It shouldn't be visible. It is clear that the occasional muggle does wander through here.

Please let me know if there are any problems with the cache or the coords. Have fun!
