The Heydon Chapel is part of a private 44 acre trust administrated by the Heydon Trust and is located in western Sandys Parish. This is the smallest church in Bermuda and was built in the early 1600’s. It is named after Jeremy Heydon, an investor in the Bermuda Company who ran the government of Bermuda in the early 17th century. The interior of this unique little church has beamed ceilings and four rows of pews. The Trust administers and owns the houses, property and land. The park has fruit groves, flower gardens and a bird sanctuary and some of the land is still being farmed. The gardener is the only person who is paid from the trust. Everyone else volunteers their services working at the park and chapel. Gregorian chants are still held on weekdays at 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. and on Saturday at 3 p.m. This is the only church in Bermuda where such old traditions of plainchants are still carried out that date back to the times of Pope Gregory the Great. Views of the Heydon Bay can be seen from the Chapel which is the north eastern part of Ely’s Harbor. This cache may be an effort for geo-tourists who are unable to rent or ride scooters since a long walk will be involved in reaching it. You may take the #7 or #8 bus to/from Dockyard or Hamilton. Just ask the bus driver to let you off near the Heydon Chapel Road and follow the road to the top of the hill. It can also be reached by walking the Railroad Trail starting behind the Police Station at Mangrove Bay or Somerset Bridge. There is a dirt path that will lead you for a distance than turn left onto a paved road. Follow it and it will lead you to the Chapel. Please bring a writing tool to sign the log.
