Geocache Description:

The butte visible from this sign was first called Pyramid Peak. It was renamed "Steptoe" for a commander in the Indian wars at a battle in 1858 near the present town of Rosalia. In the 1880s James S. Davis built a resort and observatory on the Butte's top. A Powerful telescope stood on the roof. After Davis death the hotel was lost by fire. In 1946 Virgil T. McCroskey donated the land to form Steptoe State Park. A road winds to the summit and offers a panoramic view of the Palouse Country. If you have time, head on up to the top and get the caches located up there. You are looking for a clear soda preform at ground level. This should be a quick roadside grab with a great view.
