The Periodic Table of Elements - 58 - Cerium

Cerium is a chemical element with the symbol Ce and it has an atomic number of 58.  The atomic mass of Cerium is 140.116. 

Things you might not know about Cerium:

  1. Cerium is the most abundant of the rare earth elements, making up about 0.0046% of the Earth's crust by weight.
  2. Cerium was discovered in 1803 and was named after the dwarf planet Ceres, discovered two years earlier.
  3. A major technological application for Cerium is as a catalytic converter for the reduction of CO emissions in the exhaust gases from motor vehicles.
  4. Cerium is used in carbon-arc lighting, especially in the motion picture industry.
