Ytterbium (i-tur-bee-əm)
is a chemical element with the symbol Yb and it has an
atomic number of 70. The atomic weight is 173.054.
Things you might not know about
Ytterbium:
- The world production of ytterbium is only
about 50 tons per year, reflecting the fact that ytterbium has few
commercial applications.
- Ytterbium metal increases its electrical
resistivity when subjected to high stresses. This property is used
in stress gauges to monitor ground deformations from earthquakes
and explosions.
- Some ytterbium alloys have rarely been used
in dentistry.
