Geocache Description:

Bringing you to this location to showcase the Westwood CoGen plant. It is a 30 mega-watt-capacity facility that burns approximately 400,000 tons of culm annually. The plant is located on the opposite side of interstate 81(cache placed here for safety reasons). The CoGen plant started operation here in 1987.

Schuylkill County is well known for its anthracite coal mining operations. The Westwood colliery was just one of the many old collieries that once dotted the county, and stood where the CoGen plant now stands. The colliery was an underground deep mining operation. Due to the many years of mining here, there was a huge mound of culm (culm: coal dust, inferior grade anthracite). The CoGen plant uses the culm and mixes it with limestone so it can burn it in their combustors. This process produces electricity and alkaline coal ash. The coal ash is then used to reclaim abandoned strip mining pits and other abandoned mine lands.

There is plenty of parking nearby. The view of the plant from GZ is best when there are no leaves on the trees. The cache is a well stocked 5 gallon bucket with a lid. It is a short walk from parking, and should not give you any trouble. Please be sure lid is replaced properly so everything stays dry.

This cache is placed as part of the Schuylkill County Bicentennial Geocaching event(GC2VBBV).

The oringal cache went missing, sometime before 10/14/11. So I decided it needed to be hidden better. The replacement cache was stocked with lots of kid swag and a few other items. Happy Hunting!!
