The Texas Spirit Quest
is a series of Caches placed by
many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of
paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have
‘walked’ before
us.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural communities
across Texas. This series will introduce you to many of them. The
cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries,
tombstones and local lore.
This site, which is tucked in under the trees directly alongside
the road, is alternately known as the Bell Springs, Bassford, or
Old Bee Caves Road Cemetery. It is surrounded by a simple fence and
the grounds are in excellent condition. There are approximately 20
graves here, but only four or five headstones are extant, two of
them for members of the Dittmar family. There are two plots
surrounded by small decorative wrought-iron fences, and others that
are enclosed by simple limestone walls, one of which is mortared.
For eleven of the graves, not so much as a name is known.
Information on the remainder is also sketchy, and only three dates
of death have been recorded, two in 1881 and one in
1900.
There is fairly regular traffic along this road, but the
shoulder is wide enough for safe parking. You will have to enter
the site to make the find here, but the gate is not
locked.
