Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden in the Dedridge Burn Plantation. It is close to a pond where a giant blue damselfly can be seen. There are wide paths which would be easy to negotiate with a pushchair.

Damselfly

The cache is a small plastic lock 'n' lock style box with room for a log book and small items only.  The cache was relocated on 19th July 2011 and the hint has been updated for the new hiding place.

Restoration work on the pond has recently been completed and a number of artworks have been installed along the paths, with one in the centre of the pond.

Damselflies are different from dragonflies. When they land, damsels fold their wings along their bodies.  Dragonflies wings are more robust and remain sticking out.

There are many myths associated with these creatures. One old name was the "devil's darning needle" as people believed that if you fell asleep near water, the damsel flies would sew your eyes shut. Swedish folklore believed that goblins, elves and fairies lived in the woods and used damselflies as tools for making holes. A Swedish name can be translated as "hobgoblin fly"!
