Another West River Railroad Cache !! The West River Trail may well be Vermont’s oldest transportation path. Native Americans called the West River “Wantastiquet” or “waters of the lonely way”.
1879, this path was developed into the West River Railroad, originating in Brattleboro and terminating at the South Londonderry Depot.
Poor GPS Reception near GZ so use the Hint and Spoiler for Help......
" One day toward the end of the century a train left Brattleboro but stopped at the West Dummerston bridge when the engineer saw it swaying and trembling under the impact of flood waters. Soon the southbound train reached the other end and passengers walked across. H. G. Barber crossed two minutes before the bridge went out. E. L. Hastings was still on when it sank but he leaped to safety. At the time a new iron bridge was nearing completion alongside."
