5 caches have been placed around the Codroy Valley for the Feather and Folk Festivals 1st Geocaching event. They are placed in both great birding areas and areas around the Wetlands Ramsar site. There are plently of awesome views for you to enjoy so bring along your camera and have fun!
The name of this cache "Peep-lo" describes the call of the endangered Piping Plover. Searston beach is one of the very few areas in Newfoundland that have been home to these birds during the nesting season (April - August). Although the Piping Plover has not been seen on Searston beach in a couple of years, they have been successful in raising chicks on Millville beach, located on the other side of the river.
These birds are very sensitive to the acts of humans and rely on us to use caution when in their area in order to provide minimum disturbance. Some of the things that you can do to help when you are at the beach are:
1. Walk at the waters edge, avoid the dune area where these birds nest
2. Keep pets off the beach or on a short leash
3. Take your garbage home with you so that you don't attract predators to the area
4. If you dig holes in the sand, bury them in before you leave...tiny chicks may fall in.
5. If you see a Piping Plover, do not linger in the area...keep walking until you no longer see the bird.
6. Make sure your ATV's are not driven on the beach...you may run over chicks or nests without knowing.
If you decide to walk the beaches after finding the cache, please follow these rules. The Piping Plover will be thankful for it!
The cache can be accessed on the Searston side of the Bailey bridge. The bridge is not in working order at this time so you can only get to this cache on this side of the river. The cache is a camouflaged twist-top container and has a log book as well as trade items. There is lots of parking in the area, but low vehicles may want to park at the road instead of coming down the dirt path.
