As you approach this cache from the road you will see a massive
hill that rises up to a maximum height of 250 feet at its highest
point. This is truly an unusual site to see in "flat as a board"
Houston. Depending on the wind you may notice a not so polite smell
in the air. You will also be hearing many unusual pressurized air
releases in the area. Welcome to the McCarty Road Landfill. Taking
in over 7,200 tons of waste a day, the 8th largest landfill in the
United States has a remaining life expectancy of 37.9 years and is
one of the largest producers of landfill biogas in the region.
Landfill biogas, which is created when organic material in a
municipal solid waste landfill decomposes, consists primariliy of
about 50 percent methane. The captured gas from Houston's McCarty
Road landfill is carried through a six-mile pipeline to the
Anheuser-Busch Budweiser brewery to help generate steam energy for
the brewery’s power plant. More than 55 percent of the
brewery’s fuel demand is supplied by this new alternative
fuel source. I did spot a few thorns in the general area, but you
could do it in shorts if you are paying attention. You can get away
with parking on the side of the road, there is quite a bit of room.
Cache is a camo soda tube. The area is deserted at night, but there
is quite a bit of traffic in the morning.
Congrats to Latitude_Attitude and
Nebulus703 for the FTF! Thanks for going out
there!
P.S. If you are looking to climb the hill turn
right at the fence instead of left, then look around.
