UMD has several rain gardens, designed to slow the flow of
stormwater to Oregon Creek. This flagship garden can handle the
runoff from the nearby 2.5 acre parking lot - it can hold 60,000
gallons, or almost 90% of the rainfall from a 1 inch
rainstorm.
The rain garden consists of a wetland zone, a sediment basin, and a
small woodland hiding a small cache. The water entering Oregon
creek ends up cooler and clearer as it works its way to Lake
Superior.
